Push Notification Interview Questions

This architectural challenge, reported from an interview at xAI, focuses on engineering a scalable broadcast engine that instantly alerts subscribers whenever a creator publishes fresh content. Candidates must carefully balance product requirements with robust backend mechanics, making key decisions regarding data structuring, efficient message distribution strategies, and delivery reliability. Rather than getting bogged down in low-level cluster provisioning, the exercise evaluates your ability to handle high-throughput event flows and social graph relationships. Access to the complete problem breakdown and expert architectural patterns requires a paid subscription.

Design a massive-scale notification infrastructure capable of handling tens of millions of dispatches every minute across multiple delivery channels. Modeled after real-world Reddit engineering interviews, this system design challenge focuses on event-driven pipelines, transactional outbox patterns, preference resolution, and handling high-fanout celebrity scenarios without crashing downstream services. You will architect robust dispatch topologies and throttling mechanisms for hundreds of millions of active accounts. Full access to the comprehensive problem scope and reference architecture requires a paid subscription.

Explore a real-world system architecture challenge modeled after communication platform designs used at Airbnb. This exercise tests your capability to architect a dual-pipeline messaging infrastructure capable of handling both instant, event-driven transactional alerts and scheduled, high-throughput bulk campaigns across multiple communication channels like SMS and email. You will need to address scalability, rate limiting, and reliable message delivery. The full problem and model solution require a subscription.

This Pinterest system design prompt focuses on building robust machine learning architectures for large-scale personalization tasks, such as selecting optimal push notifications or ranking advertisement candidates for impression slots. You will need to articulate comprehensive strategies covering feature engineering, custom loss formulations, probability calibration techniques, and online experimentation setups. The exercise tests your capability to balance user engagement metrics against strict frequency caps and platform constraints.
